Joseph Smith and Temples

There are two place names that reflect the mentatlity of Independence:

Independence, MI
Libery, MI

Joseph wondered when/where can the temple be built in this primitive area..
Answered in D&C107? Independence would be the land of promise..

Dec 1831 Edward Partridge bought some property, then Joseh came later to place the cornerstone of the temple.

The Whitney store was purchased by the church about 20 years ago and has recently been restored to what it was like when the Saints were there.

The most significant feature was the upper-room floor where the School of the Prophets was met. D&C88 was given in Dec 1832 and specifically the Saints were called to study and seek knowledge out of the best books (v118), and v119 prepare all needful thing… establish a house, a house of faith, order, God..

This revelation (D&C88) had importance to establish the School of the Prophets. The school is a forerunner of temples, because of what went on there…

D&C88 v70 – Call a solemn assembly

v74-75 – Sanctify yourselves, purify your hearts, cleanse your hands and feet, to be clean from the sins of this wicked generation.

v134 – He that is unworthy shall not pollute my house.

Must maintain the sanctity of the school.. but not letting he that is unworthy pollute it..

Certain rules adopted..
– The word of wisdom was given/adopted in the School of the Prophets
– Come bathed (a bath there was more of an event rather than a habit)
– Accepted a commitment to not divuldge the sacred things that were given there.

James E Talmage, House of the Lord, pp110-11 – “There is a definite sequence of development in the dealings of God with man,” hence the design of temples must be revealed according to “the needs of the dispensation to which they severally belong”

As we make the point that the Latter day revelation of temples.. not only have we the printed word to support it.. but we have temple buildings.. concrete evidence of that.

D&C 94 – Three sacred blessings at the heart of kirtland.. Temple, House of the Presidency, and a House for Printing.. All building are to have the same dimensions.. Interesting. It’d be a kind of set of buildings, one of which would be the temple.. the latter two (all but temple) were never constructed.

D&C 95 – v8 – I would like to endow you with power from on high.

D&C 95:13-17 — The lower part of the inner court should be used for prayer, sacrament.. (chapel)
The upper floor is to be used for educational purposes..

Truman Angel – said – Frederek Williams addressed the people in Kritland temple.. . the 1st presidency gathered near the temple.. and was given a vision of the future temple.. then it came over them so they could see the pattern of every details for building the Temple..

Joseph Smith drew up the plans..

24 temples in the heart of City of Zion.. on the plat.
Apparently they were not all ordinance building .. some would be schools, meetinghouses.. etc…

maybe the temple for the independence in the 1830s was different than the “arched over temple” (given by Orson Pratt?) for the temple of the New Jersualem..
The Lord will reveal the design when it comes time to build it.

Nothing, when Joseph received the ‘Alvin in the Celesital Kingdom’ vision, about the work for the dead was revealed then.. but layed the foundation.

In the case of Kirtland Joseph had never dedicated a temple before.. so he prayed for guidance.. D&C 109 is the dedicatory prayer that he got.

In the prayer for Kirtland are many features we see today.. blessing the building, work might go forward, etc..

Good faithful members of the church take both positions.. That Joseph received the Book via Revelation and some that say that it comes from the Book of Papyri.

Charcol example.. sending off to a date to date for carbon 14..

Glue and paper to which the fragments are glued is 19th century..which bled through the papyri and no uncontaminated fragments could be found.

People that date the papyri deal with the style of handwriting.. Some dude wrote some volumes.. though there’s a problem with the 3rd volume.. for a 1200 year time period he has 9 manuscripts.. for a 500 year time period he has 2 manuscripts to compare against.. not really good for dating.. This is why people date the papyri to the timeperiod of the romans.. because it looks like that time period.

On the papyri is a “this book transcribed by XYZ, and my parents and grandparents are.. “.. so because there were 4 people we knew who had this job.. So this guy that analyzed it dated that to 200-150BC… (Ptolemaic Period)

some people dont think the genalogically method actually works.. better than the comparison to other documents..

Transmission of the Text:
How does the text get to the copy of text that we have?
- Autograph Version
– Abraham writes the text and it comes to Joseph Smith
- Egyptian Transmisson
– Abraham writes the text out in Egyptian in Egypt.. passed down by Egyptians.. eventually comes down as the text Joseph Smith got
- Jewish Transmission
– Abraham writes the text, he hands it to descendants.. pass it down.. copy it pass it down.. descendants wander off into Egypt and take the text, translated into Egyptian, Egyptians pass down text, text comes to Joseph Smith.

This is all null if you believe the book of Abraham came direct from revelation.

The creation account is an account instructed by different accounts.. From an infant to an exalted being.

Abraham 3:

Kolob is a type for the Messiah.

Abraham 3:22-23 — Many of the nobel and great ones.. and he stood in the midst of them..

If Jesus is not in the midst of your life you are in deficit (6)

Abraham 4:1 — Gods — noble and great ones mentioned in chapter 3.

4:10 – Gods saw that they were obeyed
4:11 – Even as they ordered

Gods (plural) saw that something would be obeying.. the Earth.. D&C 88 .. The earth is a living entity.. When the Gods order the Earth to do something, they fall back and wait until the Earth has finished with what it has been commanded.

The Earth is choosing to obey.
The Earth obeys the Celestial Law.. By being obedient.

4:2 – Empty and Desolate

In Abraham he calls them ‘times’ instead of ‘days’. It could be any preset of time that it takes the earth to do what it’s been commanded to do.

1st day – v1-2 — The earth is formed; “Let there be light”
2nd day – v5-8 — Provision is made for clouds, rain, and storms to give life to the earth.
3rd day – v9-13 – Dry land appears; vegetation comes forth.
4th day – v14-19- Lights in the heavens; seasons
5th day – v20-23- Fish and fowl; commanded to multiply (water and air)
6th day – - Beasts are created (morning); man on the afternoon.. commanded to multiply and fill the earth.
7th day – - He rests. Engaged in Spiritual Work/things.. Resting from your temporal labors so you can focus on the spiritual matters.

Every time the Gods come the Earth is beautified.

the further we progress in the creation, the more orderly it becomes.. House is a House of order.

3 + 3 without God is A marriage outside the temple.. without God. 3+3+1 = 7.. Seed planted within the woman (Christ) who grew to crush Satan. The Seed of the Woman is Christ.. is divine.

7th day — Exaltation. D&C 132:22..

5 covenants in the sealings.. 4 with God and 1 with each other..
East end of the Garden was placed Cheribum (2 angels).. on the outside of Solomons temple were two pillars representing marriage.

When Abram entered into the conventant of marriage his name was changed.
Abram = Exalted Father
Abraham = Father of a lot of nations.

Exaltation was promised.. now see that your children obtain it, Abraham..

Anytime the Lord shows you an order or a pattern, there’s a meaning for that order/pattern.

Genesis 49:1.. comparable to the meaning of the names of the 12 tribes.

49:1 — ‘Behold a son’. ‘Listen’ and ‘attend’. ‘Praise’ him. he ‘exalts’ and ‘bears thee up’ and ‘judges’ the ‘contender’. ‘Go straight’ and ‘wrestle’. ‘God will resore’ thee again to the ’son of hte right hand’.
49:2 — ‘See the son’. ‘Hear’ and ‘join’ him. For ‘priase’ and ‘honor’ is he ‘hired’ to ‘carry’ the ‘wages’ and ‘judge’. The ‘contender twists’ it. ‘God restores the son of his right hand’.

Names in the house of Israel is found within the prophet of Joseph.. who comes from the tribe of Joseph.

The Coming Messiahs:

Messiah = Anointed one to do something
Ben = Son of..

David = Redeemer Role..
Aaron = Forerunner.. someone who is called who will be Priest who will prepare for David..
Joseph= Some believe he will be a redeemer.. some believe he will be a forerunner.. some believe he’s both.. Samaratans believe the salvation will come from the line of Joseph.
(The book of Ruth is a type of redemption.)

Testament of Simeon 3:11 – “The Lord shall raise up from Levi as it were a high priest, and from Judah as it were a king”

4 horns on the alter.. meaning the blood of the lamb covers all 4 corners of the earth.
Kafar means to ‘cover’.. as long as we’re holding on the blood of Christ we’re protected …

— The assumption is that he’d come before the ressurection..
— We interpret it as he’ll come before the 2nd coming.
– Elias shall come and restore all things.
— Did john restore all things? Did Isaiah? Moses? Abraham?

– Elias is come already and they knew him not.
— John prepared the way for his 1st coming..
— There is one that shall come before his 2nd coming.

Who is Elias? Behond this is Elias, whom I send to prepare the way before me.
Then the deciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.. AND ALSO OF
ANOTHER who should come and restore all tings, as it is written by the prophets.

Conclusion:

1. The Messiah-ben-Joseph will “arise at the end of days” (Ginzberg, the Legends of the Jews, 5:299, n.201)
2. Messiah-ben-Joseph prepares and is a “forerunner” to the world prior to “when Messiah-ben-David appears in all his glory” (Lausner, the Messianic Idea in Israel, 497; Agus, The Binding of Isaac and Messiah, 220)
3. Messiah-ben-Joseph is to come through the lineage of Joseph through Ephraim (Ginzberg, The Legends of the Jews, 5:299, n.201)
4. Elijah is to return as fortold by Malachi 4:5-6 during the days of Messiah-ben-Joseph.
5. Mesiah-ben-Joseph is to be “the revealer of the true faith” of Jehova. (meaning that there’s going to be a false faith)

Just like entering temples.. we have a statement of good worth and standing in the kingdom of God.

In Ancient Times, people had 2 ideas about what temples were..
(1) The temple is a place of revelation between God and man, or of contact between heaven and earth.

(2) The temple is a place where sacred priesthood ordinances are performed for the living and the dead.

Not all temples in our dispensation were a ordinance building.

Hugh Nibley:
The Greeks, Romans and Egyptians had a common idea about what temples were..
They were a place of contact between Heaven and Earth. The highest point in our earth
in which the heavens would reach down and contact.

Sacred Rituals were performed in these ancient temples.

One of the most Ancient Temples is the Parthenon. Built on the Acropolis. An elevated site.
People would be looking up to the temple.

Some places in the ancient world there were no elevated places.. Mesopotania.. In ancient Mesopotenia
they constructed Zigorats. Architects made the stairway promenent.

James E Talmage in House of the Lord defined the endowment as a path that leads us back to God.

The most notorus of these Zigorats is the Tower of Babel.
Bab — in Arabic means “Gate”
El — in Arabic means “Elohim”

Nibleys research discovered that the earliest religions taught that there was a God in Heaven who had from time to time manifested himself to Man on Earth. As they apostized they taught otherwise..and built statues to remind them of the Living God..but forgot about God and just worshiped the statue.

The true function of the temple is to bring us closer to the Lord.

The Arch of the Covenant was the one item in the holy of holies.
Exodus 25, talks about how the arch was surmounted of Cheribim (Cheri = one, bum = more than one)..
specifications in Exodus 25, said the wings would meet.

“Whats the meaning of the Wings..” Prophet Joseph askes.. the wings represented the beings power from
being able to move from one place to another..

The color of gold was used promently in this room.. Silver and Bronze was used in the outer areas..
Gold was not symbolic, but used as the most precious metal to make it sacred.

5 cubit square rooms surrounding the temple.. unknown what their use was for..

Debir (Hebrew name, could be related for dabar for speak).. The holy of Holies.

Those that enter the city need to be pure/cleansed..

Each of the courts in the temple (Herods temple) was a few steps higher..
closer you got to the holy area there were fewer peoples allowed there..

Herods temple was much taller, more lavish temple.

Israelis believe that the temple is 300 feet to the north of the dome of the rock.
