Jordanelle

Time for another Triathlon. This one is at Jordanelle up past Provo canyon by “Francis, UT”. Fun little place. Last year I didn’t have a wetsuit and almost froze.. this year I hope to do better.. hopefully.

Pete and Colleen are also doing it. We’ll see how far behind I am in the end.

Back to School

So, today was my first day back at school. All for teaching some young minds ready and eager to be molded in the ways of correct Database Design and Management.. (I didn’t decide on that title)

A few interesting things happened today.

First, the projector in my room did not work right with the computer. I had a couple of students playing with it. Then I sent another up to Erics office to get his projector. Not to be found. Anyway, we ended up moving rooms over to a stupid room that had a stupid computer. I could hardly read the screen, and it didn’t have Firefox. What a fun start of the day.

Went through all the syllabus, schedule, reading, etc.. got done with plenty of time so I started in on some intro to databases.. I really wasn’t planning on spending that much time on it, but I got a head start on Relations, and Relational Algebra definitions.

Then there was $STUDENT who brough in a little hand held camera to record my screen movements.. it was interesting. Not like $FORMER_STUDENT who also brought one in. I was really annoyed a few years ago when he brought it in, but with $STUDENT, I’m ok with him recording me. I even mentioned I was thinking of doing a podcast. One student asked that if I did, “would we still have to come to class?” Maybe I will.

Anyway. School’s in session.. Fun stuff ahead…

Things I learned at Education Week

So, the week is over.. and a new week begins. Back at $JOB waiting for school to start tomorrow to teach my class.

What did I get out of taking a week off and attending Education Week? Well, there was a bunch of things.

1. When the Lord gives a list of something it’s probably important to figure out why
2. When the Lord uses numbers in the scriptures 3, 7, 14, 49, etc.. there’s probably a reason why.
3. When the Lord renames, renumbers, reorders something (Like Jewish months), there’s a reason why.
4. The Old Testment has a lot that I need to learn.
5. It would be sweet to learn Hebrew.

Plus there’s more.. I put comments in my notes of ‘find this out’ or ‘buy this book’ during places that the lecturer talked about the “homework” we were supposed to do.

I need to get GospeLink 2005 to help me out on some of this research.. well, it appears they have an online version as well.. Hrmmm… Is it worth it?

FRI – A Tale of Two Josephs

FRI2030
A Tale of Two Josephs
Patrick D. Degn

Alpha and Omega
—————-
Type for Christ
Also a representation of the bible.

Genesis Revelation
50 chapters 22 chapters
Begins: 7 days of creation Begins: Seven churches
Middle: Sacrifice of a son Middle: Victory of the son
End: Joseph reigning with Pharaoh End: Saints reigning with God

Themes are the same..

Joseph receives a new name from Pharaoh.. Zaf-pa-na-ia (sp?).. check out the meaning of that name.

Two things given to Joseph after his reunion with his father:
1 – Shechem (the place shechem, central city of refuge.. shoulder or back.. place of decision, judgement.
where the sins of the people will be recogned.. between the mountains Gerazim and Ebal)
2 – “The second gift was the garments made by God for Adam passed from hand, to hand, until they came into the possession of Jacob” (Ginzburg, Legends of the Jews, 2:139).
- See genesis 3:21
Coats of skins ‘kethoneth ore’ or “garments of light”.

– remnant of the coat was preserved.. the ‘HEM’.. his authority.. his genealogy was on it..
– Alma 46:23-24

“He aroused hate or love, fear or admiration. Never indifference. Some sought him out, whiel others avoided him, but nobody failed to notice him. Nobody failed to take stand for or against him. ” — Joseph of Egypt (Eli Wiesel, Messengers of God, Biblical Portraits and Legends, 129)
The story of the 1 is the story of the other..
they both began their story at age of 17..

D&C 76 — 6 visions given there
– why show and let them see/feel Satan.. so they can see the contrast when the light comes.

If Genesis is a type for the last days.. who keeps his covenant and retains the birth-rite? Joseph.

Joseph has 6 dreams..
Joseph, Prisoners, King

Genesis 37:5 … the words of Joseph are hated by the rest of the house of Israel.. Hmmm … (BOM)

Sheaves — wheat — bread – prosperity.. God’s word..
Gathering to God’s word is the symbol for Sheaves..

2nd dream:
Genesis 37:11 — observed the saying..

His word is #1 .. established.. God’s people #2 is established..

sold into egypt for 20 pieces of silver.. 20 years or younger..

3rd dream — where God perfects his covenant with his people.
Genesis 39:9->
- 3 branches
- ripe grapes
- vine
- in my hand
- 3 days after Gethsemane Christ shall be restored.
- “touch me not for I have not yet ascended..”
- the dreams themselves typify the house of Joseph going into Apostasy..and eventually being restored.
4th dream — baker
Genesis 39:16-17
- How many had the fruits of the harvest in them? 1 of the 3 had merit. one of the 3 was lifted up.. one of them had fruits..
- 3 are lifted up..one has fruits.. all are destroyed..
- For the king. Not for himself.. but for the King.
- Jesus’s works were not for himself but for his father..

Genesis 39:19 – hang thee on a tree..
– Acts 5:3 — whom ye hung on a tree
– 1 pet 2:24 – in his own body on the tree..

14th day of Nizon.. AD32.. christ was striped and crucified and hung on a tree..
in Jewish tradition in passover they have three loaves of bread..and stripe the middle one..

3 days after this.. was the Pharoahs Birthday..
3 days after the 14th of Nizon.. was the Kings birthday.. In his new resurrected life..
— he made a feast unto all his servants..
Analogy between the 10 virgins.. 5 went in and the other 5 did not.. 1 of the prisonrs got back into pharoah and the other got killed…

5th Dream – Pharoahs Dream –
Genesis 41
– 7 kine = cattle .. Joseph was lost and forgotten.. but now in the dreams of the King he’s dreaming of a symbol.. Cattle.. Cow.. Bulls.. Oxen.. symbols for Joseph.
- central item is the kine .. cows.
- Joseph is still lost.. now the King in his mind is dreaming of the symbol of Joseph..

6th Dream – Pharoahs Dream.
Genesis 41
- 7 corn stalks..
- Corn was the symbol/theme for the dream.. same as the 1st dream.
- Now with Joseph no longer lost.. can a restoration of the ‘bread’
- 1 Nephi 13:23 —
– Behold .. IT.. (bible)..
– Bible has the covenants of the House of Israel
– When it left the mouth of the Lord it had the covenants AND the word..
– After they go forth.. from the Jews unto the Gentiles.. comes the great and abom. Church..
– They took out the covenants.. they’re lost.

The last two dreams are about the restoration of the Word.. and the covenant.. through Joseph..

Now the Butler remembers Joseph in prison..

Genesis 41:14 — sent and called Joseph.. the KING sends and calls for Joseph.. in order to restore his land..he call Joseph out of prison.. He shaved himself and changed his clothing.. he adorns new clothing..
- God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peave 41:16..
- 2 Nephi 3: — the stick to grow together.. establish peace among the fruit of thy loins..

What does Pharoah do to Joseph now?
He restores him out of the prison.. he gives him authority.. he gives him a ring.. new garments.. a new name..

41:45 – Zaphnath-paaneah — a ruler forming an alliance with a Gentile girl
“A revealer of Secrets” is what ‘Zaphnath-paaneah’ means.
Reveals God’s word and God’s covenants..

Genesis 45:1->
- He cried..
- v5 For God did send me beore you to preserve your life..
- v7 To preserve you a posterity in the earth..
- v11 Nourish thee..
- The story of Joseph of Egypt.. it’s the story of the House of Israel.. Not just Joseph Smith alone..

We offer the cup of atoning blood to the nations of the world.. and the other tribes of Israel..

FRI – Reconciling Ruth: The Kinsman-Redeemer

THR 1910
Reconciling Ruth: The Kinsman-Redeemer
Patrick D. Degn

Ruth’s name is spelled out every 49 letters.. Boaz’s name is spelled out every 49 letters intermingled with Ruth’s name.. to illustrate that they are one.

Prophetic level of Ruth.. the whole book is a type and a shadow of what is to come in the last days.

The book of Joshua sets the stage for the end-time culmination that comes in Revelation.

Judges — Ruth
Spiritual darkness — light
Immorality — purity
Pursuing Idols who are no gods — deciding for the One true God
Disloyalty — devotion
lust – love
war – peace
cruelty – kindsness
disobedience brings sorrow — obdedience brings blessing
desert of rebellion – oasis of righteousness
faithlessness of the ‘chosen people’ – faithfulness of a Gentile

Ruth 1:

Reconciling Ruth: The Kinsman-Redeemer –
The Law of Gleaning: Lev 19:9,10 ; Deut 24:19,21
— One reaping. Anything left was for the poor.
The Law of Redemption: Lev. 25:47-50
— Lands are subject to redemption by a kinsman (redeemer) goel.
— Certain conditions applied:
1. He had to be a kinsman
2. He had to be Able to perform
3. He had to be a Willing to perform
4. He had to Assume all obligations
The Law of Levirate Marriage: Deut 25:5-10
— Same conditions from above pertain here.

Names in the Book of Ruth:
Elimelech: My God is King (Israelite, Bethlehemite)
Naomi: Plesant
Mahlon: Sick
Chilion: Pining; failing; puny
Orpah: Gazelle; (fleeing, apostasy)
Ruth: Friendship; beauty; desirable
Judah: Praise

Gentile daughter-in-law (Ruth) Assuming the God/responsibilities of the Israelite father…

Two key figures:
Ruth — Companion
– the daughter of Elimelech and Naomi (Ruth 1:2,4)
Boaz — In Him is Strength

The only reason Christ was born in Bethlehem was because of Ruth and Boaz..

2:10 — Boaz never tells her to get up. He’s a type for Christ.. not like an angel.. “get up, get up.. dont worship me”..
2:12 — Under whose wings thou art come to trust.
– he takes us under his wings.. he takes and covers her.
2:17 — 7 bushels
2:20 — the man is our redeemer
2:21 —

Naomi the Israelite woman.. who’s lost her husband.. sees in Boaz the king of Bethlehem an opportunity for her Gentile daugher-in-law to partake the blessings of the King of Bethlehem.

3:2 — 10 maidens.. interesting parable with that.

Chapter 1 – wheat harvest (passover)
Chatper 2-3 – barley harvest (feast of pentecost)
Feast of Pentecost is the only time a marriage of a Gentile can happen.. leven can enter into the bread.

3:3 – Wash thyself, Anoint thee.. put thy raiment upon thee.. washed, anionted and clothed for her bridegroom..
get thee to the threshing floor.. moriah.. temple of solomon?

A type in Naomi telling Ruth what to do..
(israelite telling a gentile what to do)

3:9 – Spread therefore thy hem over thing handmaid; for thou art my redeemer

Jerish’s daugher.. 12 years.. woman of the hem.. healing.. another type of Ruth and Boaz

Boaz is the Christ type.. we must petition him for the covenant.. then he covers us with his authority.. blood.. with the robes of his righteousness..

Some believe the fields of Boaz are where the sheperds watched their flocks..

3:15 — Bring the vail…
3:18 — will not rest until he hath redeemed her…6 measures of barley.

4:2- 10. signal of witness and law.
4:8 – drew off his shoe.. “I can’t do it”
- Boaz took the shoe who’s shoe-latched he was worthy to unloose
4:10 – Jesus will raise up the dead.
4:11 – Christ resurrection has witnesses
4:11 – Ephratah = bethlehem
4:12 — david is the first one in the line that can assume kingship..
4:15 — Boaz’s mother is Rehab the harlot of Jericho.
- Jesus’s mother wasn’t a harlot.. just the opposite.. she was a virgin covered in innocence.
Rehab became clean by the red token

Boaz A Type for Christ:
1. Mighty in Pedigree (2:1)
2. Might in power (2:1)
3. In Boaz lay total authority (2:5)
4. Rich in grace (2:10)
5. Large in provision(2:14-16)
6. Plenteous in redepmtion (4:19)

May we be like Ruth the Moabite and cast our lot with Boaz/Him….

FRI – The Prototype of a Covenant Marriage

“Look unto Abraham…and unto Sarah” (2 Nephi 8:2)
The Prototype of a Covenant Marriage
Patrick D. Degn

2 Nephi 8:2 — Look unto Abraham your Father and unto Sarah

Phone rings.. “wo, wo, wo unto you.”… literally means “damn you”..

Abraham 1:2 — should memorize this.
If abraham is the prototype for a good father, husband, man.. 1:2 is how he did it.

10 from Adam is Noah.. 10 from Noah is Abraham..
7th Patriarch is Enoch.

Alma 31:5 — try the virtue of the word of God.

“True doctrine understood changes behavior and attitudes..” – Packer

You can divide Abrahams part up into two parts of 7 each.

From Abraham to David are 14 generations.. David to Babylon are 14 generations..
from Babylon to coming of Christ are 14 generations..
14 harkens back to the 14 trials of Abraham.
As we go through the first 7 we are crowned something.
Then we go through another 7 and we are crowned something.

Sarah = Princess of the Lord

Whatever God requires is right no matter whatever it is.. Prophet Joseph Smith

Can the Savior instantly age something? Relation to the creation? Water aged into the wine.

The Trials of Abraham and Sarah:
- Exalted Father ————– - Father of Nations (When does God change his name?.. in the covenant of Marriage)
1. Get thee out of Lekh Lekha (12:1) 1. Charity (18:1-15)
2. Obedience (12:10-20) 2. Sodom and Gomorrah (18:16-33)
3. Weightier matters of the Law (13:5-13) – now that he’s father, he has to go to the world to extract his kin.
- Abram was the tribal leader. 3. Abimelech (My father is king) (20)
- What he would have said would
have been law. But he gave Lot
the fertal land.
4. Battle of the kings of this world 4. Battle of hte wives (21:1-21)
- Genesis 14:1-6, 21-24
- Cities on the plain.. 6.
- v23 – I will not take dirty money
5. Battle with the god of this world (15) 5. Gentile (21:22-32)
- where he covenants - Abimelech
- note the # of animals and the ages - Phichol – find out what this means
(5 of them) (3 years old)
5 = fallen man
Gene 15:9
- v12-14 — like First Vision.
Satan knows whats going on here.
- 15:17 – God is making a covenant with him
6. Assault on the Family (16) 6. Sacrifice of the son (22:1-14)
- 16:13 - type and a shadow.
– Beer-lahai-roi – look in footnote - on the same place.. Morriah, ridge that Golgatha is.
– Well of Water - age
- Kadesh (city of Refuge) v14 – Better translation: on this mount the shall be seen
- Bered (son of Ephraim) It’s a prophecy..of what will be carried out on this mount.
— between the holy place and ephraim.
— temples and ephraimites.
7. The blessing of exaltation (17) 7. The blessing of eternal seed (22:15-19)

You twain (two) shall be one flesh..
Cleave has two meanings..
1. cut them in two
2. to hold to firmly and tightly to such a degree that the two bodies become one flesh
Cleave is a covenant word..

These same covenants are found in our Temples today..

FRI – Ancient Links Between the Book of Mormon and the Old Testament

Ancient Links Between the Book of Mormon and the Old Testament

Prophetic Perfect.. what is it?
In Hebrew, an action is understood as either completed or incompleted. There are no past present, or future tenses. In the Prophetic Perfect, a biblical prophet transports his mind ahead so that he describ3e a future event as if it has already occured.

Examples of it:
Isaiah 5:13 “are gone”
Isa 9:6 “has been born”
1 Nephi 5:5 “have obtained”
2 Nephi 31:8 “was baptized”
Mosiah 15:12 “has borne” “has died”

Mosiah 12:1 — Abinadi came in disguided
1 Samuel 28:8 — Saul disguised himself
Kings, Prophets, Disguises… death of the King..

1 Kings 14:2 — prophet, king, disguise.. doesnt fair so well for the king.
14:10 –

1 Kings 20:38 — king, prophet, disguise… king wiped out as well as his dynastsy

1 kings 22:30
2 chro 18:29
2 chro 35:22

Disguise .. not even the highest king of the earth can hide himself or his sins from the Lord.

Creation Imagery:
“The kernel of ancient Eastern creation thought does not lie in the (historically motivated) interest in the origins of being but, rather, in the concern for the present.” Stefan Pass, Creation and Judgment: Creation Texts in Some Eighth Century Prophets (Leiden: Bill, 2003): 54.

Through creation imagery, the biblical author “projects a certain continuity of divine power upon which humans can rely.” Michael Fishbane, Biblical Myth and Rabbinic Mythmaking, 35

In Genesis chapter one, the word of God performs the nourishing acts of creation through the formulaic expression: “God said…” (v. 3, 6, 9, 11, 14, 20, 24, 26, 29)

But if ye will nourish the word…” (alma 32:41)

Note in Alma 32:41 — ’springing up’..
Genesis 3:18 — “bring forth”

The verb smh (yismah) translated in the KJV as “to bring forth’ literally means, “to spring up.” The Brown Driver Briggs Hebrew and English Lexicon (Peabody: Hendrickson, 1996): 855.

Genesis 2:5 — before it grew (yismah)
Genesis 3:24 — “drove out the man”

In Hebrew, the verb translated as “drove out” garas(h) means “to drive out, to cast out”
The Brown Driver Briggs Hebrew and English Lexicon (Peabody: Hendrickson, 1996): 176; see Genesis 21:10

Alma 32:5 — they have cast us out of our synagogues
Alma 32:5, 9, 12, 24, 38 (cast out examples)

Genesis 1:11-12
Alma 32:31

Wisdom in Creation
“And on the sixth day I commanded my wisdom to create man” (2 Enoch 30:8)
Jer 10:12
Psalm 104:24
“Blessed is He who created the earth with his power, who established the world with his wisdom” (11QPSa) Hymn to the Creator

2 nephi 2:15

Clothing:

In the ancient world Clothing represents a bond.. either between men, or between men and God.
1 Samuel 18

Ruth 3:9 — skirt should be ‘robe’.. significant of the covenant of marriage
Ezek 18:8 — clothed you.. covered thy nakedness.. sweared thee.. and entered into a covenant

2 Nephi 9:14 —
2 Nephi 4:33 —

Enallage — greek for “Interchange”
2nd to 3rd person

Altar as a Place ofo Deliverance:
1 Kings 1:50-51
1 Kings 2:28

Alma 15:17

Joseph Smith and Temples

It isn’t just enough to do the temple work for those that we can just think about.. we must study and find those that are not in our mind..

If there weren’t any work for the dead we would only go through the temple once for those ordinances.. so it’s a blessing and a privilege to go back again and again and recieve these ordinances on behalfs of others.. We can refresh our minds of the commitments and words given there.

Never say “to take out” your endowment.. use “receive” instead :)

not only those that enter in the temples are blessed… but those that live in the area are also blessed..

FRI – Gospel Topics

FRI1230
Robert J. Matthews
Gospel Topics – “The Spirit World and the Resurrection of the Dead”

the whole concept of a spirit, pre-mortal life, post-mortal life and resurrection.. is a very powerful, important and strong principle of the restored Gospel.

Resurrection is a major and marvelous prime doctrine.

In the Pre-mortal life:
- both male and female spirits.
- procamation of the family
- each is a beloved spirit — sons or daughters of Heavenly Parents.
- Gender is an essential characteristic of individual pre-mortal, mortal and eternal identity and purpose
- Conditions in the Pre-Mortal life:
- not one meeting but several meetings.
- sin in the premortal life? yes.
- repentance in the pre-mortal life? yes.
- forgiveness? yes.
- “All are equal in that they are the Spirit children of God.. and also equal in their right to agency..
as well as in the fact that all are made innocent of previous wrongs commited as they enter this world
through the Atonement of Jesus Christ” .. Harold B Lee.. from his “Teachings” pg23
- D&C 93:38 — Every spirit of man was innocent in the beginning (when we were born as Spirits).. men became ‘again’..
.. in their infant state innocent before God.

Mortal Life:
- waiting for their deliverance (D&C138).. the resurrection
- They looked upon the long absense from their separation of both and spirit..
- Your birthday is one of the very keys to your eternal salvation and welfare.
– maybe we should make ourselves and families more aware of birthdays.. the day we entered into mortality.
- 2 Nephi 9:5 — “Yea, I know that ye know that in the body he shall show himself at Jerauselem”
- 2 Nephi 9:4 —

After the Resurrection:

THR – The Book of Abraham as a Type: Of Kolob and Kokaubeam

THR2030
The Book of Abraham as a Type: Of Kolob and Kokaubeam
Patrick D. Degn

It is a type in multiple layers for how we gain our External Exaltation.
Abraham in itself is Caiastic in nature…it all points to the middle chapter.

The Lord typically puts his most precious gems in difficult imagery..

Fac #1 – Sacrifice
Fac #2 – The map/process/knowledge on how to gain your exaltation
Fac #3 – You are coronated and crowned a King and a Priest..

Sacrifice leads to knowledge which leads to greater sacrifice which leads to more knowledge…until you are crowned/exalted..

West side of the SLC temple on the central pillar (3 pillars).. there is a constallation.. Ursor Mayor.. Big Dipper
East is the direction for light/revelation/Godlyness
West is the direction for sin/lost

If you’re in the west, and lost at sea.. you look for the big dipper you are pointed to the north star.. look to the heavens and they will guide you out of your state of apostatsy or your loss..

PGP – the best place for teaching the ordinances one makes with God..

Abraham 3 —
Ur of the Chaldees(Babylon) .. How we go from Babylon (in the world) into Gods presence

Stars = Children of God

This one star, will be the governor of all the other stars.. He’s at the center of creation..
Kolob represents Christ..
Kolob in Egyptian.. KLB.. what does it mean?

God is represented in 3 in 1.. or 1 in 3.. in #1 on Fac #2..
The only way they are separate is bodily..

Christ must be the center of our lives or we’ll be out of balance.. (axle on a bike example)

JST on the 7 statments Christ made on the cross.. “thy will IS done”

2 facts that Abraham is being taught.. Abraham 3:1-6
1. 1 start will have more glory than the other
2. One star is greater than them all..

v10 — If you find a star.. look for the next brightest star and so on..until you find Kolob
But stars represent people..

v18 — the clue that he’s really talking about people… “as also”

Abraham learned that it was Kolob.. the North star is how we got our bearings now when we’re lost.. or Christ when we’re lost..

True greatness is found in those who love him most.. or those who love him most will be closest to Christ.
True greatness is found in your proximity to Christ.

v18- Light = Intelligence

D&C 93:24,36 — light, truth, etc
D&C 93:39 — that wicked one comes and takes away the light and truth of the children of men
D&C 84:45
D&C 130:18

Nobel and Great ones .. what makes someone nobel? Proximity to Christ.. kolob.

Teachings of Ezra T. Benson, 327-328 — love him most will be most like him.

Sometimes we hear there were 2 plans.. there was 1.. he tried to amend it.
