Viruses and CPU Heatsinks

So, I’m here at the InfoWest Datacenter in the cold with my laptop. I decided to try out Ecto a neato little Blog posting application for MacOSX and now Windows. It connects right up to my favorite blogger to post my blog.

Anyway, I just had to get some information on our new InfoWest Cache CPU. Appears we need to make sure the stepping and SL number are correct for a second 2.8GHz Xeon that should be coming soon…..

In tearing open the case I just marveled at how easy it was to do everything. I brought in a power screwdriver as well as regular ratchet-type screwdriver because I assumed the CPU heatsink was screwed down to the motherboard. What a surprise that it wasn’t when I opened the beastie up. There were two clips holding the heatsink in place. Wow. Easy as pie to remove them and look at the bottom of the CPU.

I’ve come to have a great love for Server rails. Yes, I’m sick. But, if you have to tear into rackmount cases weekly it’s so easy to pull a server out, loosen the thumb-screw and open the beastie up right there on the rack. All of this without having to unmount the huge thing, take it apart all on the floor and then trying to lift that 100 pound 4U monster back into it’s place on the rack. Yes, rails are nice.

After getting the cache server back online I did some “tail”ing of the squid cache log and discovered two people that seem to be infected by some sort of viruses. Their IP was getting multiple TCP_MISSes in requesting URLs that were just IPs. One after another.. just random http://11.11.11.11 type URL’s. Lucky for us, InfoWest is a little pro-active when it comes to this type of situation and I gave Tom a ICQ and had him make two tickets for these customers.

Don’t people realize that their Internet connection is going slow? I mean, there was a DSL customer infected yesterday that had trouble with their connection ‘bouncing’. I wonder why. Sending so much outbound traffic that the DSL modem was having a fit staying online. Or the fact that the client might be experiencing ’slowness’, but instead of running a virus scanner he just complains that his Internet is slow.

enough ranting.. I’m hungry.
